Our story

In Canada's history, only two home-discovered antibiotics have ever reached the global market. Fedora's team discovered both.

Fedora Pharmaceuticals Inc. is a Canadian biotechnology company dedicated to discovering and developing first-in-class antibacterial therapies to combat the growing global threat of antimicrobial resistance. The first Canadian antibiotic to reach the world was tazobactam, invented by the late Dr. Ronald Micetich; the second was nacubactam, discovered by Fedora under the leadership of Christopher Micetich, cementing the Micetich family's extraordinary record of translating science into life-saving medicines. Both men have been inducted into the BioAlberta BioIndustry Hall of Fame, and each has received an Alberta ASTech Award in recognition of their achievements in scientific innovation, entrepreneurship, and advancing biotechnology.

1982

Tazobactam

Dr. Ronald Micetich invents tazobactam, one of the world's most widely used β-lactamase inhibitors, and one of only two Canadian-discovered antibiotics ever to reach the global marketplace. It still restores the effectiveness of antibiotics against resistant bacteria today.

1987

SynPhar Laboratories

Dr. Ronald Micetich co-founds SynPhar Laboratories as a joint venture with Taiho Pharmaceutical, whose success would lay the foundation for a family legacy in antibiotic discovery.

1999

NAEJA Pharmaceutical Inc.

Following the success of SynPhar, Dr. Ronald Micetich and Christopher Micetich co-found NAEJA Pharmaceutical Inc., creating what would become one of North America's premier contract drug discovery organizations, home to a team of medicinal chemists, microbiologists, pharmacologists, pharmacokinetic scientists, and drug development experts.

2005

A legacy carried forward

Following Dr. Ronald Micetich's passing, Christopher Micetich led NAEJA through a period of exceptional growth, expanding to more than 160 employees, including the largest concentration of Ph.D. medicinal chemists in Canada.

2007

Hall of Fame recognition

Dr. Ronald Micetich is posthumously inducted into the BioAlberta BioIndustry Hall of Fame in recognition of his pioneering contributions to medicinal chemistry and antibiotic discovery.

2011

Fedora founded and nacubactam discovered

Christopher Micetich founds Fedora Pharmaceuticals with a singular mission: to overcome antimicrobial resistance. The team discovers nacubactam, a novel β-lactam enhancer with a dual mechanism that combines β-lactamase inhibition with direct antibacterial activity.

2015

Licensed to Hoffmann-La Roche

Nacubactam is licensed to Hoffmann-La Roche in an agreement valued at up to US$750 million, at the time, one of the largest biotechnology licensing transactions ever completed by a Canadian anti-infective company.

2022

FPI-2119 discovered

Fedora discovers FPI-2119, a first-in-class, non-β-lactam penicillin-binding protein inhibitor derived from the lactivicin family, designed against the multidrug-resistant Gram-negative pathogens named as critical threats by the WHO, CDC, and Canadian public health authorities.

2023

A second Hall of Fame induction

Christopher Micetich is inducted into the BioAlberta BioIndustry Hall of Fame for his leadership and lasting contributions to Alberta's biotechnology industry and Canada's life sciences sector.
